Four Tips for Avoiding Stress during a Divorce
By : Adam Snider

When going through a divorce, most people are understandably stressed. Experiencing a divorce can be the most stressful experience a person deals with. Often, stress can take a toll on our physical health as well as our mental health. Thankfully, there are ways to reduce your stress levels, even during a period as stressful as a divorce. If you're going through a divorce, here are some tips to avoid stress:

1. Talk about it: Divorce is an emotional experience, but many people feel they need to "be strong," and not show their emotions during this time. Keeping the strong emotions you will be feeling bottled-up will only lead to more stress. Talk to someone you trust about your feelings--this can be a friend, family member, or a therapist. Once you get these feelings off your chest, you will feel less stressed.

2. Live positive: It is very easy to become negative and depressed during a divorce. While it is natural to feel upset and disappointed that your marriage is coming to an end, focusing on the negative aspects of the situation will only make you feel stressed out. Instead, focus on the good things in your live. If necessary, make positive changes. Eating healthy and keeping active will help keep you in a positive state of mind. When you improve your physical health, your mental health will usually improve as well.

3. Don't let your emotions get the best of you: While it is completely natural to feel strong emotions while going through a divorce, it is best not to let them get the best of you. Don't make any rash decisions that you may regret later. If you find that your emotions are getting difficult to control, talking to a therapist or trusted friend may help (See Point #1).

4. Make time for friends and fun: Divorce can sometimes be a long and complicated process. Depending where you live, you may have to wait up to a year for your divorce to be finalized. It is easy to let the divorce consume your life during this time. Make sure that you don't let this happen. Make time to visit friends and have fun. Just because you're getting divorced doesn't mean that you aren't allowed to enjoy your life. Go out for dinner, watch a movie, or go for coffee with a friend and forget about the divorce. Even if it's just for an hour or two, taking a mental break from the stress of the divorce will do wonders for your emotional health.

While divorce is a stressful time, there are ways to reduce your stress during the experience. Don't be afraid to let yourself go and talk about your emotions if you're feeling overwhelmed. Don't forget to take time out to enjoy yourself. A divorce is not a pleasant experience, but that doesn't mean that you have to be miserable. Enjoy the good things in your life and you'll find that you're much more able to handle the stress that comes with divorce.
