No. 7 You May Not Need a Lawyer for Your Divorce

You May Not Need a Lawyer for Your Divorce
By : Adam Snider

It is estimated that as many as 95% of all divorces in the United States are uncontested. This means that the vast majority of divorcing couples come to an agreement about the issues of property, children, and support. Often, both parties reach an agreement without the involvement of lawyers.

If you and your spouse are able to come to an agreement about the terms of your divorce without the use of a lawyer, you may be reluctant to incur the expense of hiring lawyers to complete your divorce. Thankfully, there are ways of getting a divorce without hiring lawyers.

In order to get an uncontested divorce, you and your spouse simply need to draft divorce papers to file with the courts. The easiest way to do this is to use one of the many online divorce packages that are available.

In some cases, you and your spouse may not immediately come to an agreement about the terms of your divorce. This doesn't mean that you can't have an uncontested divorce and save money by filing for divorce using a do-it-yourself divorce form. This simply means that you will have to slowly work through your issues until you can come to an agreement with your spouse.

You may find that it is necessary to involve lawyers or mediators in order to come to an agreement with your spouse regarding property, child and support issues. This doesn't mean that you have to keep the lawyers involved for the entire divorce process.

Once you and your spouse have reached an agreement, you can now make use of an online divorce package. By cutting the lawyers out of the process as soon as you have reached an agreement with your spouse, you will save a great deal of money that would otherwise have been spent on legal fees.

If you do choose to take a do-it-yourself approach to divorce, keep in mind that online divorce services are unable to give you legal advice. They can only provide you with the documents necessary for divorce. While many of these companies will help you understand the divorce papers that you are filling out, they cannot give you advice for your specific situation.

In cases where you are in need of legal advice, it is recommended that you consult an attorney. However, if you and your spouse have come to an agreement regarding the terms of your divorce, and are both able to understand and complete the necessary paperwork without consulting a lawyer, you can save yourself a great deal of time and money by using an online divorce package to draft your divorce papers.
